USAgain (pronounced use-again) is a for-profit textile recycling enterprise. USAgain started collecting clothing and shoes for recycling in 1999 and has since expanded into 18 states with over 10,000 collection bins currently in operation. Our mission is to give new life to clothes and shoes that would otherwise end in a landfill.
We partner with local schools, businesses and municipalities to place a recycling bin at their property where community members can easily drop off their unwanted clothes and shoes. At least once a week, we collect the items and bring them to our local warehouse where they are processed and shipped to markets in need of affordable clothes in the U.S. and abroad. In this way most of the clothes are reused, and the rest is recycled into insulation or wiping rags. We create green sector jobs, protect the environment, and help improve the well-being of people in America and around the world.
Every article of clothing collected by USAgain results in carbon dioxide diverted from our atmosphere. Clothing production is incredibly taxing on the environment – it takes about 700 gallons of water to produce just one t-shirt – so finding a way to reuse a garment reduces the need to keep buying new and throwing away. Textile dyeing and treatment processes are also detrimental to the planet, and each reused garment is another small step toward curbing the pollution and avoiding effects of climate change. USAgain takes great pleasure in giving back to the communities we operate in – we have donated clothes to non-profits and are sponsoring the planting of 200,000 trees in 2013. Recycling unwanted clothing is a small, yet vital step toward mitigating and adapting to climate change. By making it easy for people to recycle the clothes they no longer want or need, USAgain is doing its part toward creating a cleaner, greener future.
