St. Louis Retaining Wall Company, EcoWorks Green Retaining Wall

The EcoWorks product line is designed and manufactured with recycled fly and bottom ash, which is a coal combustion by-product. Ash management firm Charah, Inc. processes the ash on-site at AmerenUE's Labadie, Missouri plant. Charah collects, screens, blends and bags the 100 percent post combustion (post-industrial) ash from AmerenUE's Labadie Plant. The ash is then purchased and used in block production and module infill by Saint Louis Retaining Wall Company. The bottom ash from Charah is also being mixed with organic materials for plant growth, and this recycled ash blend media is being used and tested as backfill on the SIUE project.

The ash is not considered as hazardous waste by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which Ameren recycles for various construction and manufacturing applications, including blasting grit and structural fill; synthetic roofing shingles, lumber and bricks; concrete and cement production; and snow and ice control through Ameren Energy Fuels and Services, Ameren Corporation's non-regulated fuels company. When used in product manufacturing, bottom and fly ash create better, longer lasting and more attractive products, while all the companies involved practice responsible management and beneficial reuse of what is considered coal combustion byproducts and would otherwise go unused. In 2006, over 500,000 tons of Labadie bottom ash was recycled in Missouri.
